Power Bottoms
Power Bottoms
There is an old saying that clothes make the man, while I tend to favor my male figures with few clothes on. But as my latest original Power Bottoms shows, there is plenty of appeal in a guy who is fully dressed in well fitted clothing. It's just how those clothes are filled out. So really it's the man that makes the clothes.

The original as well as limited edition Gallery and Studio prints are available at the special first day pricing through Midnight ET tomorrow.

Most of my works are built around a scene, a moment, an emotion. But there are works, like my latest, whose genesis are a look, a body, a pose.

April Winner
Recién Casados
Recién Casados
Congrates to Ron S. of Maryland! I picked his post — it's getting so hard to choose! — from all the others about Recién Casados last month. His prize is on its way!

Michael, I've always been in awe of your work, especially this piece. I agree with your thought on this painting. My home State, "Maryland", has recently passed the Gay Marraige Act, complete with spousal rights...Yeah...been so long coming! So, I know the importance of this act for all same sex couples across the country as well. Being partnered for 16 years on April 3rd, this was great news for us & we will be married in May. The beauty of this painting says it all...2 dark haired, swarthy looking Men with well sculpted bodies in an embrace, seems to verify that they are a couple in Love! The light shining on the veranda is also eye catching. Keep up the wonderful work, Michael. Superb!

March Contest Winner
Oopsy Daisy
Oopsy Daisy
Congrat's to Cliff A. from Texas! I picked his comment about Oopsy Daisy as my favorite. There were, again, so many good ones it was hard to choose. As someone suggested, I've posted the winning comment here. But please don't try to mimic previous winners. Just be genuine. I really enjoy is each person's individual take on a piece.

Cliff Tx said:

Really like the playfulness in this one. Two guys in love messing around on the grassy hillside, who stop to admire a single daisy amidst the flowing greenery. What a reminder it is to cherish something; and, to give hope that Spring is just around the corner. Makes me wonder if they would, in real life, pick it to press in a book to for a reminder of the day. Great work on all that grass BTW!

I did this piece shortly after Spain began allowing gay marriages, and with the sames-sex marriage cases that have recently come before the US Supreme Court I thought it would make a good Print of the Month. Suddenly, Last Summer (Svenska Sommer)
I actually finished my latest work, Suddenly, Last Summer over a month ago, but it was commissioned by a collector as a gift for his partner, and I was asked if I could hold off releasing it until after the gift was given, to make sure the surprise was not spoiled. Last night I received a confirmation email from the owner.

He was really overwhelmed and likes it as much as I do. Thank you again - you really did a great job and made two boys very happy!

2013 Calendar Correction
2013 Calendar I mentioned in my last newsletter the mistake on my 2013 calendar for the month of July. For those who had ordered my calendar, over the next few months I will include the corrected grid with any order you place at my online gallery, BREYETTE.COM. If you would prefer a replacement page sooner, simply send me an email requesting it. Otherwise, I will mail out the remaining July pages sometime in May.

I'm also making the July grid available for download if you'd like to print it out yourself. If you just wanted the calendar for the artwork and don't care about my blunder or don't need a replacement, feel free to let me know and I'll check you off the list.

2013 Calendar Blunder
2013 Calendar I was recently notified - and mortified to learn - that the date grid for the month of July is incorrect in my 2013 Calendar. Each year when I'm designing my calendar, I'm always so afraid I'm going to make a mistake like that, and damn if I didn't! I still can't believe I didn't catch the error before it was sent to the printer. But I'm trying to stay positive and not get too upset over my blunder. After all, I can't go back in time and undo my goof up, nor can I really afford to reprint my calendar. But what I can do is try to fix it.

After weighing possible solutions for a couple of weeks, I decided to have the July grid reprinted and punched so that it can be easily tucked into the spiral of the calendar. I have a list of each of you who purchased the calendar, and how many you purchased. So over the next few months I will include the corrected grid with any order you may place at my online gallery, BREYETTE.COM. If you would prefer a replacement page sooner, simply send me an email requesting it. Otherwise, I will mail out the remaining July pages to those who haven't placed an order or already requested one sometime in May.

I'm also making the July grid available for download if you'd like to print it out yourself. If you just wanted the calendar for the artwork and don't care about my blunder or don't need a replacement, feel free to let me know and I'll check you off the list.

I am very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

PS - For those of you who had inquired while the calendar was unavailable on the website, they can once again be purchased. The remaining calendars will contain the corrected insert.

Wood
Part of the inspiration for my latest work came from the lingering snow that has stuck around for the past several weeks. At first it was beautiful, but living in the city that never lasts long. Long Hard Day
While composing the concepts for my paintings, it is not uncommon for me to have a debate with myself on whether the figure will be full frontal or not. Ghouls Gone Wild
Ghouls Gone Wild
When it came to this years Hallowe'en piece, I began by thinking what classic creature haven't I done yet? The mummy was immediately at the top of the list, but I was stumped with what to do with him. When a friend suggested I do a piece that wasn't supernatural, my first thought was to draw a hot guy getting dressed up for Hallowe'en. But after more thought, I realized how titillating a mummy costume would be to remove!

Ghouls Gone Wild is my first post-show work. In addition to the Original, limited edition Gallery and Studio prints are available for purchase at the special day of release pricing through Midnight ET tomorrow.

Update
I've been on a bit of a break since wrapping up my show in Provincetown last month. I'd like to thank everyone who came to check out my artwork. I enjoyed meeting many of you at the reception, and really had a wonderful time. While I haven't picked up a pastel in close to a month, I have begun work on this years Hallowe'en themed piece. It is currently in the planning phase, where I flesh out the details in my head and on the computer before beginning my preliminary sketches.

MS Walk This weekend I'm off to the Cape again, but this time I'll be walking 50 miles over 3 days for the MS Challenge Walk. Thanks to everyone who donated and helped me reach my goal. I've shipped out nearly all the complimentary 2013 calendars to those who gave $50 or more, so they should be arriving in a few days.

Austin

Painting a cowboy-themed piece is always a special treat for me. I really get caught up in rendering rustic elements like weathered wood, old barns, worn denim, etc. Plus, cowboys are hot.

While the original is available for immediate purchase through the Lyman-Eyer Gallery, it must stay with the gallery through the end of my upcoming show, Under the Sun.

Limited edition Gallery and Studio prints are available through BREYETTE.COM at the special day of release price through Midnight ET tomorrow.

New Release
Bath Time
Bath Time
I had never been a dog person until my friend got one. Once I started dog sitting, I quickly became attached to the little mutt and came to understand the bond between dogs and their people. This is my second piece celebrating that connection.

Bath Time is the latest work in my upcoming show, Under the Sun. While the original is available for immediate purchase, it will remain with the Lyman-Eyer gallery through the end of my show in August.

Limited edition Gallery and Studio prints are available at the special day of release price through Midnight ET tomorrow.

21 2.0
21
21
I had never fully connected with the subject's face in my work 21. When I recently regained possession of that piece after its display at the Lyman-Eyer gallery, I took the opportunity to do something daring, something I had never done with a piece I had already released.

I made some adjustments. And now I'm happy. All prints of 21 going forward will be of the revised version. This means if you have a print of the earlier version, it will be all the more rarer.

Just a note, you may need to do a hard refresh for the updated images to appear (ctrl + f5).

Original Sketches
Original Preliminary Sketches For the first time I am making available my original preliminary sketches, where thought is first put to paper, before a single pastel is ever picked up. These are my graphite drawings where the layout and look for my pastel paintings are first conceived. They are rough and raw and show all the creative smudges and erasures, and even some elements that got altered in the final piece. These unique originals come ready to display; signed, mounted, & matted, in a 17x20 frame. No prints available.

Hung
Hung
While the electric clothes dryer is certainly a convenient appliance, the clothesline is far kinder to the environment. Plus the fresh scent of nature beats anything a dryer sheet can provide. And should your sexy neighbor catch a glimpse of your freshly cleaned skivvies, he may just offer to help you get them dirty again!

Hung is my latest work to be a part of my upcoming show Under the Sun this August at the Lyman-Eyer Gallery in Provincetown, MA. While the original is available for purchase, it must remain with the gallery through the end of my show.

Encounter
While working on my latest piece, Encounter, I noticed some coincidental similarities with my previous work, Deep Blue. Both feature nature prominently. Both portray someone who is injured or in distress. And both depict a mythical or legendary being. While unintentional, it will be interesting to see what I come up with next.

Steve Walker 1961-2012

Canadian born artist Steve Walker passed away in early January from a heart attack near his home in Costa Rica.

Steve Walker

He may have not been a mainstream household name, but within the gay community any guy with eyes most likely knows the name or has seen the art of Steve Walker.

Before I began putting my own work on display (around 1999-2000) I had very little knowledge or even awareness about the gay art genre. Sure, I had seen gay-themed paintings and illustrations. But I didn't know the names of the artists, or anything about them.

But that quickly changed, and Steve Walker was one of the first artists whose name and work I began to easily recognize. That was partly due to the immense popularity of his work. But I was also drawn to him because, while his work was gay themed it was not first and foremost about sex (not that there is anything wrong with that). His work spoke about the emotions, relationships, and social aspects of being gay, and that was something I, along with countless fans of his work, identified with.

From the beginning of my career I've gotten comments comparing my work to his, which I've always taken as an honor, but saw as more a testament to how well known and how appreciated Steve's work was by the gay community. While I see all the differences in our art, just the fact that people saw qualities in my work that caused them to compare it to the most well known contemporary artist of the genre was and is humbling.

Years later when my work was picked up and represented by a gallery (Lyman-Eyer of Provincetown) that also carried Steve Walker's, it was definitely a benchmark moment for me.

When I got the news a month ago that Steve Walker had died at a mere 50 years old, I was saddened, stunned and in disbelief. I guess in the back of my mind, since we brushed along the same circles, I thought that one day I'd get to meet him in person, thank him for inspiring me as an artist and in my life, talk technique with him, and commiserate about the social anxiety of gallery openings.

From all your fans, thank you for the gifts you have given us, you will be greatly missed.

Deep Blue
Deep Blue
I've done a few fantasy type pieces before, like the butterfly guy in Metamorphosis and the Halloween pieces I do each year, but when I was young, painting fantasy and sci-fi pictures was something I did all the time. While I can't predict the trajectory my art will take in the long term, Deep Blue could definitely be a strong indication for the direction of my upcoming works.

While the original is available for purchase through the Lyman-Eyer Gallery, as part of my solo exhibit in Provincetown later this Summer it cannot be delivered until after the show.
