The colorful history of shore leave began centuries ago when sailing ships made extended ocean voyages possible. When these ships finally made port, the all male crews took the opportunity to indulge all sorts of drinking and debauchery, so much so that often the captains had to find replacement sailors. Even modern navy crews use shore leave as an opportunity to engage is extracurricular activities not afforded them in the close quarters aboard ship.

As I continue to create pieces for my new show, I am drawing upon the show's theme... iconic gay imagery. Naturally sailors fit that bill. I figured that the tradition of getting a tattoo while in the navy, nearly a rite of passage, would make a great focus for the piece.
