Sensual good looks paired with a playful vulnerability make Alan in Blue a truly captivating piece. And those smoldering dark eyes are simply pools to drown in. I first connected with writer and photographer Alan Bennett Ilagan in late 2003 when he reached out about my artwork. I will admit, I was instantly drawn to his gorgeous features, but a pretty face has never been able to hold my attention for very long. What kept me coming back were his relatable writings on gay life. I came away feeling as though I had found a kindred spirit. I had so much fun doing this piece, and not just because Alan is so incredibly hot, though that certainly helped! Playing with the artistic effects was a blast. If I were working with paint, I would probably need an airbrush to get that bright reflective shine on the metal pool rails, but pastels make it so easy. From the warm sunlight hitting his muscular body to the wet footprints left on the cement, every detail was a joy to create. Since this was my first work completed in my new home, I am thrilled it was such a positive experience.
