Original Preliminary Pencil Studies

For Michael, the creation of a pastel painting was a multi-faceted journey that always began with a preliminary pencil study. He utilized these sketches to solve the foundational puzzles of his work: the precise balance of light, the weight of the shadows, and the structural integrity of the composition.

The Estate is slowly releasing these original, hand-drawn artifacts on archival paper exactly as they were found in Michael’s studio at the time of his passing. These working sketches are smaller than the final pastel originals, and their dimensions naturally vary from piece to piece. While a select few of these studies were signed by Michael, most remain unsigned. Every original pencil study is accompanied by an official Estate Certificate of Authenticity to guarantee its permanent provenance.

The estate is offering these works in their purest form, unmounted and unframed. To preserve the "artist’s hand" and the value of these original works, we recommend having them professionally framed. Specifically, "float mounting" with museum-grade hinges and UV-protective glass is ideal, as it showcases the natural edges of the paper while protecting the delicate graphite from fading.

Giclée Prints

We offer giclée reproductions of Michael’s original artwork, produced on archival-quality, acid-free matte fine art paper using pigment-based inks. This high-quality process provides a print life exceeding 200 years if framed under glass or acrylic.

Prints are classified in two ways: by the edition and by size. Prints come in either Limited Edition or Open Edition, as noted on each individual piece. Gallery, Studio, and Portfolio refer to the size (see the sizing details at the bottom of the page).

Limited vs. Open Editions, Pricing

Most prints are offered in limited editions in one or two sizes, as well as an open edition in a third size. To continue sharing Michael's legacy, we now offer newly released Estate Editions.

Estate Limited Edition Prints
These are newly released, finite editions fully authorized by Michael's estate. While not hand-signed by the artist, they are sequentially numbered and come with an official Estate Certificate of Authenticity to guarantee their provenance and adherence to Michael's strict quality standards.

Estate Open Edition Prints
These are unrestricted, unsigned reproductions newly authorized and released by the estate, offering an accessible way to enjoy and collect Michael's work for years to come.

Varied Pricing

The pricing for all Estate Limited Edition Prints is ‘tiered’, based on the percentage remaining of a print run. As the available quantity of an edition decreases, it moves to the next higher pricing tier.
