Establishments like the ‘White Swan’ in 1810 London, and ‘The Slide’ in 1880 New York City to ‘The Black Cat’ in the 1950’s San Francisco and NYC’s Stonewall Inn in the late 1960s, the gay bar has played an important role in LGBTQ+ history. As (not always) safe spaces for the community to meet and socialize, the ‘gay bar’ quite often served as the lightning rod for legal change and equal rights. Raise a glass to that!
