Dai - a masculine given name with origin and meanings in several different languages which include ‘to shine’, ‘beloved’ and ‘large sword’.

Next up in my Mini Figurative series is Dai. There is a playful confidence to his posture, showing off a finely sculpted physique that refuses to be ignored. If you appreciate sharp lines, a classic mustache, and a man who is clearly thrilled to be the center of attention, he’ll make a magnificent, commanding addition to your collection.

The magic of working in monochrome is all about capturing the sharp, clean lines of the subject’s silhouette against the warmth of the rich, solid ochre background. Because he is posed in profile with his arms tucked back, my focus shifted to the dramatic contour of his chest and the chiseled definition of his abs. I used deep black pastels to define the intricate texture of his faded topknot and mustache, while using sweeping strokes of white charcoal to make the light catch the curve of his shoulder and obliques. This piece is all about using contrast to create a realistic, three-dimensional quality, letting his natural confidence step right off the page.
