Follow the Sun (2020)

Ralph Waldo Emerson once advised to live in the sunshine and swim the sea, and in Follow The Sun, these guys are taking that literal exposure to heart.

Painting a wide-open coastal scene required balancing the immense, vibrant turquoise of the ocean and sky with the rich, warm skin tones of the figures. To capture the pure intensity of direct sunlight, I focused heavily on the stark shadows casting underneath the van and across the sand, which naturally anchors the composition. Using soft pastels, I blended the smooth expanse of the Beach backdrop to help the anatomical details of the figures stand out, ensuring that even under the brightest sun, the focus stays exactly where the heat is.
