Restraint - Fenced (2008)
11½×18¼ Pastel on Pastel Paper
Original is Sold

As the second piece in my three-part Restraint series, Fenced continues the exploration of shedding our inhibitions under the cover of darkness. When the sun goes down, the self-imposed limits and societal boundaries that usually keep us penned in start to fall away. We become freer to let out our inner beast and leap over the fences that divide our public and private lives. Like the other self-portraits in this conceptual series, this piece carries a darker, more sexually charged tone. To capture that intense, shadowy drama, I once again embraced working on black paper, setting up a single stark light in a dark room with my camera. It was a liberating process, venturing out from my usual methods and breaking my own artistic restraints to match the very theme I was illustrating.
