There are things we employ in our transition from sleep to Wake. Some we adopt into a daily ritual, like a big stretch, a fresh cup of coffee, viewing a piece of art, or taking in the morning vista. They give us energy and inspiration for the new day.
I'd been thinking about doing a "kitchen" themed piece, and a candid photo I took of my husband, Eric, one morning served as the perfect inspiration for this painting—a wonderful way to wake up, with coffee and a view! Working in pastel, I wanted to capture the soft, natural morning light spilling through the window, illuminating the cozy kitchen interior. I focused on the relaxed realism of the moment, highlighting his powerful, muscular legs and form from behind as he stands at the counter in his t-shirt and blue briefs, waiting for the coffee to brew.
