Dreary skies and misty mountains make for a great day to stay inside the cabin. Keep on those thick wool socks to protect you from the cold floor while you brew a hot pot of coffee, then just crawl right back into bed. It is truly the only thing to do on a Gray Day.

Being my first winter in Vermont, I expected heaps of snow, white-blanketed fields, and frosted mountains. Instead, we have only had a few measurable accumulations, almost always followed by warmth and rain. Much of the Winter has just been misty, rainy, and overcast, which directly inspired this piece. This also expands on what I can now call my Day series, as I opted for a cozy, prone pose that intentionally echoes two other pieces I've done, Snow Day and Beach Day. Working in pastel, I loved capturing the rustic cabin textures, contrasting the dark log walls and red flannel pillows with his warm, hairy chest and the soft steam rising from his morning cup.
