Selfie (2014)
18¼x24 Pastel on Pastel Paper
Original is Sold

Ten years ago, I did my first full-frontal nude Self-Portrait, Naked, which was both anxious and liberating. While I've modeled parts of figures since, I hadn't done another full-frontal piece until a friend suggested a tenth-anniversary work. Once again, I am putting it all out there with my Selfie.

Working in pastel, the composition creates an intimate, modern perspective: the viewer sees a close-up of my hand holding a smartphone, capturing my image via the front-facing camera. I had a lot of fun rendering the digital interface, the steep perspective of the hallway, and even sneaking in a little easter egg; a framed print of my own artwork, Bottom, hanging on the wall right behind me.
