Spring on the farm means there is always plenty of work to do, but outdoor chores quickly ground to a halt when Mother Nature whips up a sudden afternoon shower.

While part of my artistic process involves mapping out a strict concept in advance, pieces often evolve on their own once I put pastel to paper. For this piece, the proverbial light bulb went on when I decided to add the weather element, shifting the focus to a moment of spontaneous shelter. Retreating into the dry warmth of the wooden barn, these two handsome cowboys have shed their wet shirts, hanging one on the railing to dry. With the pouring rain streaking through the green fields in the background, they stand close to the barn opening in low-slung denim jeans and cowboy hats, subtly pondering exactly how to pass the time while Waiting Out the Rain.
