Waking (2003)
30×20 Pastel on Pastel Paper
Original is Sold

I have a classic love and hate relationship with painting fabric. The intricate folds, delicate shadings, and deep shadows present a massive challenge, but when it turns out exactly how I envisioned, it is incredibly rewarding. With Waking, I really wanted to capture both the visual look and the soft texture of the bedding. The scene depicts that quiet, relatable struggle of morning light filtering through a window shade, while the subject buries his head in the pillow to hold onto a fleeting dream.
