It’s not easy being a monster, always having to be “on” and scary, coming up with new ways to frighten people. At the end of the day, it’s nice to crawl under the bed and enjoy A Good Night's Creep!
My original sketch had a completely different creature under the bed, and until I was almost finished, another peered through the window. It's like when a sculptor says the marble “speaks” to them. My paintings tell me what they want as they coalesce; I just have to listen, even if I don’t want to erase and make changes.
Working in pastel, I embraced a spooky Halloween vibe while keeping the Bedroom scene grounded. I focused heavily on the dramatic lighting, the moody shadows beneath the bed where the green, clawed monster hides with a tennis ball, contrasted with the cold lightning illuminating a Stormy night, catching the wide eyes of a handsome man in his Underwear and his loyal Puppy.
