Austin (2012)
24×18½ Pastel on Pastel Paper

There is something timeless about a quiet moment on a rustic ranch, where the day's heat lingers in the wooden beams of an old barn. Named after a city known for its rugged charm, Austin captures a cowboy taking a private, reflective breather.

For this piece, I really wanted to play with dramatic, high-contrast lighting to highlight the male physique within a rustic setting. Working in pastel, the main challenge was capturing the worn texture of the old barn wood and contrasting it against the smooth, warm, muscular contours of the figure. Keeping the interior shadowy allowed me to emphasize his intense expression and create a deep sense of mystery and isolation.
