When creating In the Face of Darkness, I wanted to capture the fierce resolve required to stand up against those who would treat us as second-class citizens, undeserving of the same rights held by others. I often hear from folks within our own community who question the fight for marriage equality, worrying about the public backlash, but why should we ever back down from wanting the exact same legal rights as everyone else? Denying same-sex couples the right to marry sends a dangerous message that discrimination is perfectly acceptable, and I refuse to live life with fewer rights or compromise on who I love. With this piece, I wanted to showcase two men standing tall, firm, and completely unyielding in front of the Capitol, because we cannot stop until true equality is proudly shared by all.
