Once Autumn came and dusk arrived early, men from town would take a late afternoon stroll through the nearby woods. Not to appreciate the crisp air, but because what was on their minds was very clear. While the women feared the legend of the Headless Horseman, the men hoped for an encounter with Pumpkin Head.
I spent a lot of time deciding on this year's Halloween piece, debating concepts like ghosts and spiders. I actually started a spider drawing first, but once the Pumpkin Head concept finally gelled, I knew it had to be my holiday painting. Working in pastel, the fun was leaning into the Sleepy Hollow aesthetic, rendering the period clothing, the gnarled roots of the massive tree, and the eerie, atmospheric fog rolling through the deep red autumn leaves.
