On the Drawing Board: back to the easel
/I took a little time off to finish building the chicken coop after I got the outline done. But I finally got back to the easel. I'm looking forward to finishing up the arms and back then working on the butt hugging shorts. If I ignore the beautiful weather outside I think I can finish up by early next week!
On the Drawing Board: back to it
/I know it's nothing close to requiring a label like Attention Deficit Disorder, but I do find it hard to do painting 'series'. I see other artists who will do whole series of a dozen or more, often putting together a show with a continuous theme, where each work is just a slight variation. I have done a few, because I like the idea of them, but it does become a struggle by the 3rd or 4th piece, and (other than my early works which I dubbed Men in Briefs) 4 is as far as I've ever gotten. I think a lot of my creativity is based on my mood, thoughts, weather and the world around me, and all that is constantly changing so I don't usually plan out works months in advance.
My new piece I'm starting is a companion to "Sweat. Pant." and though I finished that piece a couple years ago I had the basic idea for both at the same time. As is often the case, once I finished the first one I got distracted and inspired by something else. While this is a companion, it is literally 180 degrees different. This time it's all about how those workout shorts look from behind, how they cling and drape in all best places, showing off those hard earned assets.

On the Drawing Board: No 'hair yet tub man'
/One of the last things I add to my figures is body hair, and since the U.S. Treasury is updating the look of it's currency by putting Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, I thought they might consider putting my - no 'hair yet tub man' - on the reverse. ;-)
On the Drawing Board: raw and unblended.
/While I make an effort to post 'in progress' photos of what I'm working on, I usually take them after I'm done working for the day, or have completed a section I am working on. It's usually a moment where I'm satisfied with how it looks, but this doesn't show what goes on in between.
So, here's a pic (on the left) that shows the first things I do when I start a section, in this case the upper part of the face. I already worked on the eye a bit. I take my pastels and fill in with a base layer of colors, they are just scribbled on, no blending. This gives me a foundation to work from, I guess it's similar to doing make-up. From here I'll blend them together with my fingers. I'll then add other colors on top, and blend those in, creating more depth, subtleties in lighting, and more tones. Even when I think it looks done, it doesn't mean I wont go back and add/blend in more colors. That's one of the things I like about working with pastels, the surface is always workable, unlike paints in an acrylic or oil suspension that will dry.

/A bath is always better when you share it with a little rubber buddy!
I'm not sure what draws me back to certain themes (tubs, cowboys, speedos, locker rooms etc.), I guess that's a question for a psychiatrist. All I know is - they are things that make me happy.

On the drawing board: A warm, sunny spot.
/After a few days away and a few days working on building a chicken coop, the rainy and snowy weather has returned and gotten me back inside painting a warm bed of flora.
I'd prefer a little nice weather now, since it is April, but I will admit the cold spell is what I needed to get me back at the drawing board to finish this 'involved' background (which despite all the work, I am loving).
